As a skincare specialist I travel to
Sephora,
Ulta,
Nordstrom and Macy's stores all across the San Fernando valley and as far as Santa Barbara and
Anaheim. I am often asked about acids, peels and scrubs. Many people are confused about all of the different acids being as some are chemical and some are derived from natural sources. People are curious about at home peels, and which are the best for their skin concerns. I am going to touch on the basics of skin acids, peels and scrubs. I have also listed my favorite products for each category.
ACIDS: The acids include the most common-
Glycolic, Salicylic, Lactic, and
Malic.
*Glycolic Acid: is an alpha-
hydroxy acid derived from sugar cane.
Glycolic acid is a natural skin
exfoliator. It works by gently sloughing off dry, rough, and aged skin and revealing the softer, healthier looking skin underneath.
Glycolic acid has been researched and shown to be among the most effective of the
AHAs for the renewal of skin cells. This is especially true for sun damaged and aging skin. It is is widely recommended by dermatologists and
aestheticians alike. My favorite
gylcolic acid products include:
DERMA DOCTOR- Wrinkle revenge (
gylcolic wash 10%, 15%, or 20%)
EPICUREN- Gylcolic lotion (5% or 10%)
DDF- 10%
gylcolic gel with 2% salicylic
*Salicylic Acid: is a beta
hydroxy acid commonly used to treat
comedonal or otherwise known as non-inflamed acne. It is a very popular ingredient in many over-the-counter products. Salicylic acid helps correct the abnormal oil production that occurs in acne-prone skin. It works as an
exfoliant that cleans the pores and promotes the sloughing away of dead skin cells inside and outside of the pore wall.
Salicylic acid is especially helpful in treating acne prone skin because of its unique ability to penetrate the follicle. It can dramatically reduce the number of pore blockages and breakouts on the skin. This product is not recommended to be used during pregnancy or while breast feeding.
My favorite salicylic acid products include:
PHILOSOPHY- Hope in a bottle
DDF- 10%
gylcolic gel with 2% salicylic
*Lactic Acid: is a naturally occurring alpha-
hydroxy acid that is fermented from milk and can assist in smoothing, moisturizing the skin and increasing cellular turnover. Lactic acid can be used for many skin problems including the treatment and prevention of acne, fine lines, wrinkles, psoriasis,
keratosis and can even be used on sensitive or allergy-prone skin.
My favorite lactic acid products include:
PHILOSOPHY-
Microdelivery peel: Contains both salicylic and lactic acids.
*Malic Acid: is a natural substance found in fruits, and particularly in apples. It is naturally present in your body and has many health and skin-related benefits. It is an excellent
exfoliant for the skin, and a very powerful yet gentle peel.
My favorite
malic acid products include:
BIOELEMENTS- Kerafole mask (Very strong but my favorite deep exfoliating mask.)
PEELS: If you have excessive
hyper pigmentation (sun damage), lines, wrinkles, and enlarged pores, I would suggest a professional peel which can be performed at a high quality spa.
For those of you who have these issues in moderation, or simply want to prevent, I have listed some basic yet effective peels below.
My favorite at home peels include:
PHILOSOPHY-
Microdelivery peel: A two step peel. Includes vitamin c crystals a a part of step one, and a lactic/salicylic acid gel to put directly over the top of the crystals. The c crystals are massaged into the skin and the gel applied directly on top. The mixture is left on the skin for 3-5 minutes. The results are great for those with sun damaged skin, dry skin, fine lines and enlarged pores.
MD SKINCARE- Two step daily face peel: A very gentle daily two step peel. Simply apply the first peel pad to the skin. This pad is saturated in 5 fruit acids to gently resurface the skin without irritation. After 1-3 minutes apply the second peel pad directly over the first to neutralize the acids. The second peel pad is saturated in green and white tea to prevent and heal redness and any irritation.
SCRUBS: Although I prefer to exfoliate with acids and peels, many people love "
microdermabrasion." This type of exfoliation is a more manual approach and thus more physical effort is put forth on the individuals part. Home
microdermabrasion systems are an increasingly popular alternative to the expensive, invasive and time consuming professional treatments. They are relatively easy to perform, and although not as powerful as professional systems, can provide satisfactory results over time.
Microdermabrasion are usually tiny particles that "sand" or "polish" the skin and overtime help in the removal of scarred or hyper pigmented tissue. At home microdermbrasion can increase cell turnover which will leave the skin refreshed and glowing. My favorite at home scrubs/mircrodermabrasions include:
DR. BRANDT-
Microdermabrasion: Expensive, but unbelievable. It will knock your socks off.
EPICUREN-
Microderm: My second pick for best at home
microdermabrasion scrub.
DERMALOGICA- Microfoliant: Extremely gentle, using rice bran to exfoliate the skin.
